After a week filled with off-field distractions and the resignation of defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, the Tar Heels traveled to Clemson Saturday looking to put everything aside and start ACC play with a statement.
For most of the afternoon, it looked like they might do exactly that. Instead, UNC’s tough week ended with a tough loss.
UNC traveled to Clemson and jumped out to a 17-6 halftime lead, looking like a team ready to put the distractions of the week behind them. But the Tigers slowly chipped away at the lead and eventually took control.
The game became even more unusual late in the fourth quarter when lightning forced a 2-hour, 27-minute delay with UNC sitting at Clemson’s 7-yard line and holding a 17-15 lead.
When play finally resumed, Carolina settled for a field goal to make it 20-15. Clemson answered with a touchdown to take its first lead, 21-20. The Tigers added another touchdown late, and an interception ended UNC’s final attempt at a comeback.
Final: Clemson 28, North Carolina 20.
The Tar Heels were outscored 22-3 in the second half, turning what looked like a potential statement win into a frustrating ACC-opening loss.
After a week filled with distractions, coaching changes and now a disappointing loss, UNC heads into its bye week at 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the ACC.
Sometimes, you just need the week to end.
For the Tar Heels, this one couldn’t end soon enough.
