Who Is Each NBA Team’s Greatest Player Ever?

We all know who the greatest of all time in the NBA is, however, that is a debate for another day. 🙂

Today, we are asking who is each NBA team’s greatest player ever??? Below is my list.

Now, before you start picking it apart and telling me how wrong I am, note the elements I considered in creating my list:

  • Stats
  • Impact
  • Longevity (At least 4 years with the team)
  • Leadership

People often point out that stars in the modern era change teams too often. In researching for this post, I realized that even in what most of us 40-year-old+ fans call the Golden Era of the NBA (1976ish-1998ish), many star players played for multiple teams as well. Some players’ best years may have occurred on teams that they are not necessarily known for playing for. Others may be synonymous with a particular team, yet they may have only played there for a short time.

I know I’m late writing about this, but I can not resist. Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors was recently suspended for 5 games after putting Rudy Gobert in a headlock during a game. Checkout the entire altercation by clicking the video below.

If you are a wrestling fan, I’m sure you would agree that this was a textbook application of a classic wrestling move! 🤣

First Take or Undisputed?

In recent weeks, the two most popular sports debate shows on television have undergone major transitions.

After leaving “Undisputed” back in June, NFL Hall of Famer, Shannon Sharpe has joined Stephen A. Smith on ESPN’s “First Take.” The pairing of Stephen A. and Shannon has already yielded some pretty compelling debates (including the always fun Jordan V. LeBron debate). We have also already seen blunders like Shannon accidentally calling Stephen A. Skip (as in his former co-host Skip Bayless) during the first few minutes of his debut episode! The jury is still out on the pairing to say the least.

On FS1, after returning from a two month hiatus, Skip Bayless has a new theme song (“Good Morning” by Lil Wayne) and a stellar squad of debate partners. Skip has gone blow for blow with NFL Hall of Famers Michael Irvin, Richard Sherman, and Keyshawn Johnson. The show has also featured appearances by Lil Wayne and Rachel Nichols. “Undisputed” has been a bit clunky, with the panel frequently talking over each other. Skip has repeatedly reminded his cohorts that he gets the last word. Lil Wayne’s commentary has been somewhat insightful, but it’s still weird hearing Weasie talk about sports. There have been some good debates, but I’m not sure how long these strong personalities can co-exist.

For anyone who knows me or follows this site, you know that my family typically hates all things sports! They usually watch games with me just to make fun of me and my fandom or to disrespect the game! They do however like to watch the Super Bowl, not because they like football, or for the excitement of the game, but for the commercials and the halftime show! As usual they had many funny anecdotes, sly comments, and downright mean things to say about the game though! Take a look and enjoy. Who is to Blame for the Lakers Terrible Season?

The Lakers have one of the most stacked rosters in NBA history, headlined by four future first-ballot Hall of Famers (LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Russell Westbrook, and Anthony Davis). In addition, they have a core of accomplished role players and former all-stars (Dwight Howard, Wayne Ellington, Avery Bradley, D J Augustine, and Malik Monk). They have five players who average double figures and LeBron is in the top three in scoring on the season. On paper, this is at the very worst a 50 win team, yet somehow, they currently sit at an abysmal 31-48. Sadly with three games remaining, they have already been eliminated from playoff contention.

Who is to blame for this terrible season?

Is it LeBron? The King has dealt with some injuries this year. He has only played in 56 games and the Lakers are 25-31 in those games! I’m not a big LeBron fan, but I have to say from looking at his stats, he has played consistently well in both wins and losses. King James does however average 3.5 turnovers per game, which ranks near the top of the league (Not Good)!

Is it Anthony Davis? The brow has only appeared in 40 games and the Lakers are 17-23 with him on the floor. His averages for points, rebounds, and shooting % from the field and from deep are both better in the wins.

Is it Russ? Of the Lakers’ superstars, he has played in the most games, starting 78 this year. The Lakers are 31-47 with Russ in the lineup. He is shooting about 44% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc in both wins and losses. He surprisingly turns the ball over more in wins than he does in losses (4.3 v. 3.4). He has committed a league-leading 286 turnovers this season! Wow!

The Lakers are 11-10 when the three stars are on the floor together. Clearly, they are better together, but far from great.

Is Coach Frank Vogel to blame? He has coached every game this year. He is regarded as a solid coach, yet L.A. is 26th in points allowed, they turn the ball over more than all but two teams in the league, and they rank in the top 10 for fouls committed. That says to me that they don’t play defense, they are reckless with the ball, and they lack discipline. I know coaches don’t play, but they do develop strategy, motive, & inspire. Seems as if Vogel has not done any of these things this season!

Vogel is not solely to blame for the lackluster outing this year, neither are the Lakers stars. I say they are all at fault. Collectively the Lakers have failed to stay healthy, make adjustments, or consistently play good team basketball.

They are at it again!

I had the pleasure of enjoying the NCAA Championship Game along with my Sports Hating Family! They were in rare form. They had a lot to say, I tried hard to capture the best comments they made, but they were so plentiful that I’m sure I missed some. Take a look below and try not to laugh too hard.

Sarcastically speaking: “Did you go to Carolina or Kansas? Why do you care? Why does anyone care?”

“I wouldn’t want to be the person who has to wipe the sweat off the court.”

“Do they ring out the sweat towel or do they get a new one?”

“Basketball is the sweatiest, nastiest sport!”

“How do you watch this? It’s like a new team every two years. How do you know who anyone is?”

Regarding ticket prices: “People pay that much money to get sweated on?”

“If I sat close, I’d have to wear a raincoat for the game to shield me from all that sweat.”

Speaking of Brady Manek: “Why he look so old”

“Kansas’ “outfit” (not uniform) is boring! It’s just plain white.”

“They got on new tennis shoes, I bet their feet hurt!”

During Hubert Davis’ 1st Half interview: “Ewe he’s spitting all on her, why are they so close, don’t they know Covid isn’t over???”

“What happens if they win? Is there any academic benefit?”

Say Goodbye to Coach K!!!

The Tarheels have done what I knew they could, but what many thought they wouldn’t! They sent Coach K out with an “L” and in the process punched their ticket to the National Championship Game! Shout out to Caleb Love, Armando Bacot, RJ Davis, and Brady Manek! On Monday night, tune in as the Heels go after title #7! This was a truly great game! It featured a ton of lead changes, big shots, and exciting defensive moments (“cough, cough” Brady Manek blocking shots). Props to Coach K though in all seriousness. He is a legend and has meant a lot to the sport, his school, and the state of North Carolina! How do you feel about the end of Coach K’s storied career? For an unprecedented 21st time, the UNC Tarheels are Final Four bound!!!

The Heels will be vying for their 7th NCAA title at this year’s Final Four in New Orleans. As a third-generation Tarheel fan, I have to say that I am elated, ecstatic, excited, and a whole bunch of other happy words (lol)!!! How appropriate it is that the Heels will face off against their biggest rival, the Duke Blue Devils, with a chance to deal Coach K a loss in his final game as Duke Head Coach! Below are some of my sports hating family’s best quotes and questions posed during the Super Bowl a couple of years ago.

“Jay, can you get my crochet bag from downstairs? I left it, I would hate to ruin a Super Bowl Tradition.”

Regarding the Rams uniforms: “Their capris look like yellow highlighters”

“Why is the yellow on the Rams helmet a different color than their pants?”

“The NFL should have a stylist to approve uniforms.”

Regarding the man in motion: “Why does he get to just run around like that before the ball gets snapped?”

“How do they know when to stop running?”

“What is a Bengal?”

“When the game started why did they sprint for 5 feet after the ball was kicked and then stop?”

“Why do they have black stuff on their face? It looks like eyeshadow.”

“Do they have to play even if it snows?”

“Why do they kick off?”

“Why is their stomach not more protected?”

“They spend too much time on the ground.”

“Where is the ball? It should be bigger or glow or something so I can track it.”

“The Rams uniforms look like they are wearing Bermuda shorts over blue stockings.”

Conversation: “Who is O’Dell Beckham?” “Is he the one with the stupid hair?” “I think he used to date Zendaya?”

About the coach on the sideline: “Why is he sniffing that paper? Does it have anti-stress scented stickers on it?”

“O there is only 10 minutes left, that really means three hours.”

“I hate the commentators”

Regarding a 4th Quarter penalty: “Is his roughness really unnecessary? Didn’t seem any different from the roughness we have seen all night!”

Regarding Aaron Donald’s post-game interview: “This is the dumbest interview ever, what do they expect him to say? ‘I’m so disappointed that we won this game?’- This is so dumb”

Super Bowl Sunday for most people is a time for fun, football, friends, and great food! This year we kept it quite simple. Tiger on the Prowl Again?

Tiger Woods announced this week that he plans to play alongside his son Charlie at the PNC Championship beginning on December 18th. This will be Woods (45) first tour event since nearly dying 10 months ago in a single-car crash. The crash left Woods severely injured including a mangled leg. At the time it was uncertain if Woods would ever walk again, let alone play organized golf again. Tiger’s announcement has set the golf world on fire! I’m personally not really a serious Golf fan, but I have followed Tiger’s career and I’m pretty excited for him as a person that he has regained his health and strength enough to live a normal life. I don’t imagine that he will ever win another Major. He may not ever compete in another Major for that matter. However, as a father, I think it’s very cool that he is pushing himself to play in this tournament seemingly for the sake of his son.

Did LeBron Deserve to be Suspended???

For the first time in his storied 19 year career LeBron James was suspended, but did he deserve it?

Tempers flared on November 21st when LeBron James “inadvertently” struck Piston’s Center Isaiah Stewart in the face. The subsequent turn of events ended in both James and Stewart being ejected and suspended (James for one game and Stewart for two games).  Watch the video of the scuffle and let me know if you think King James deserved his one game ban.

I’m certainly not a LeBron fan or sympathizer at all. However, I have to say that his part in the incident did not warrant a suspension. The two were tangled up and James’ blow to Stewart seemed to be an accident. At the very least, he flailed, but he definitely did not intend to hurt Isaiah Stewart. After the initial altercation, James seems to be focused on de-escalating, while a bloodied Stewart is determined to avenge himself! Despite being restained by players, officials, and security, Stewart repeatedly broke free and charged towards James. Stewart looked like an old-school NFL power runningback a la Terrell Davis or Jerome Bettis busting through holes and bowling over would-be defenders! I get it, he wanted to show LeBron and the world that he’s no pushover, but did he have to knock down all those innocent people? 😁

The Detroit Lions Lose Again!!!

I had the distinct displeasure of watching the hapless Lions lose their 10th game of the season today (0-10-1). As I watched, I started to think to myself, “I feel like the Lions play and lose on Thanksgiving Day every year.” I did a little research and found that they have played at home on Thanksgiving every year since 1934 — except when games were paused from 1939 to 1944 during World War II. They have a Thanksgiving Day record of 37(W)-43(L)-2(T). They have only won 4 times in the last 15 years and have now lost 5 years in a row! Can the NFL please stop the madness!!! Can we get a better team featured in this high-profile annual slot? Who’s with me??? What team do you think the league should feature lieu of the Lions? Sound off in the comments section.

Is Scottie Pippen crazy or just trying to sell books???

In connection with the release of his new book, Scottie Pippen is suddenly speaking out against Michael Jordan. Note some of his recent quotes from interviews he’s done this week:

“Is it easier to play with a herniated disc or with the flu? … I don’t see many bad back games. But I do see flu games. Flu? C’mon,”

“I felt like the documentary only told a story that sorta glorified him as a player and not glorified us as a team.”

“I mean, he (Jordan) was a great scorer, but a lotta things that he did, was based on, him as individual. And I think basketball is a team game.”

In response to a question about how he wants to be remembered, Pippen said he wants to be remembered “as the greatest of all time.”

Let’s go ahead and tackle that last one out the gate. I love Scottie Pippen, he is perhaps the best #2 of all time, but he certainly never was in Jordan’s league. Can you imagine Robin saying with a straight face that he is greater than Batman? Or R2D2 saying that he was the true hero not Luke? Pippen saying that saying he wants to be remembered as the greatest of all time was probably the most unintelligent thing I have ever heard him utter. Clearly he knows he is not even in the GOAT conversation and said that for the sake of headlines (Which clearly worked)!

I have chronic back problems, so I can only imagine the pain he felt playing with a herniated disc, but your “Hurt Back Game” performance was not Jordan’s “Flu Game.” In the game he was referencing he scored like 8 points. Was it commendable that he played? Absolutely! While he was on the floor he made for an excellent decoy, but Scottie, let’s not compare apples to a cheeseburger!

Regarding the last dance primarily glorfying Jordan. That is absolutely true, but so what??? When in history–in movies, literature, music or any form of entertainment does the supporting cast get the same billing as the star? Diana Ross and the Supremes, Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Lin Manuel Miranda and the Original Hamilton Cast, P-Diddy and The Family, Ric Flair and The Four Horseman…shall I continue??? Dude seriously!

Scottie, yes Jordan was selfish. That’s not new! Why all of a sudden is it a problem for you that he was selfish? Let’s not act like all he did was score though. For his career Jordan averaged 5.3 assists, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game in addition to 30.1 points and he was a 9-time all defensive team selection. Sure he was selfish, but man was he a good all around player! When you are the best scorer on the floor, of course you will take more shots than anyone else. Also, I never hear Jordan claim that he didn’t need his teammates or that he won 6 titles by himself. The media and the fans may at times make it seem that way, but that’s not Michael Jordan’s fault. So Pippen, why cast stones at Mike?

I hope Pippen sells a lot of books. I can only wonder though if he will look back and wonder if it was worth making himself a laughing stock?

Cam’s Coming Home!!!

ESPN and other media outlets are reporting that Cam Newton has re-signed with the Panthers pending a physical. As a Panther’s fan for the last 26 years, I am ecstatic about Cam’s return. I may just be in my feelings because I’m a nostalgia junkie who has a hard time letting go of the past, but I’m hopeful that Cam can help the Panthers right the ship. Christian McCaffrey is expected to return from IR this week! Things are starting to look positive for the 4-5 Panthers. They currently sit at #8 in the conference, but they are only seperated by one win from the Saints who sit in the 6th spot in the NFC. I could be dreaming, but for the first time since week 4, I’m excited to watch the Panthers play!!!

When Did You Fall In Love With Sports?

Sports is perhaps the most polarizing form of entertainment that exists in our society. It is able to unite enemies and those who have little or nothing in common, while at the same time causes divisions amongst close friends and beloved family members.

People the world over, take their sports fandom seriously and sometimes to the extreme! They read about and talk about sports all day long while at work or at school. In the evenings, they watch sports on tv for hours on end. They decorate their homes, cars, and skin with logos and jersey numbers. Some are obsessed with following stats, while others are fixated on getting to know the personal life details of their favorite athletes. Serious sports lovers often take wins and losses personally as if they play for or have an ownership stake in their favorite teams.

For others sports represents an outlet, a means to put aside the troubles and frustrations of daily life and get lost in the competitive drama of the game itself. Many love sports because they have a connection with the game. Perhaps they played growing up or have cherished memories of watching or going to games with a parent or grandparent. These individuals have an appreciation and admiration for the skill and dedication displayed as they watch sports.

For me, it was watching Micheal Jordan and Scottie Pippen put Magic and the Lakers out to pasture in Game 5 of the 1991 NBA Finals. The game was broadcast on NBC and called by the dynamic duo of Marv Albert and Mike Fratello. Michael and Scottie went to work, both playing a full 48 minutes and combining for 62 points, 17 assists, & 17 rebounds. Magic fought hard, pouring in a triple-double with 16 points, 20 assists, & 11 rebounds. Magic’s gutsy performance would not be enough. This loss, on their home floor, ultimately proved to be the end of the famed “Showtime” Lakers and the birth of The Bulls Dynasty.

Another end occurred that night. Just as the game was ending, we received a dreadful phone call that a close family member had just passed away. Tired, sad, and in tears, my older brother and I watched the post-game celebration and tried to hide our pain by focusing on the piece of history, artistic display, and drama we had just witnessed.

In the days that followed, I found myself in the backyard for hours on end trying to emulate the moves I witnessed in that game (unsuccessfully, I might add!). I even decorated an old T-shirt to replicate a Bulls Jersey, so that as I shot around in the yard, I could imagine myself as a member of that historic Bulls team. Basketball, my imagination, and my memories of game 5, gave me something to focus on as I processed my grief and dealt with the loss.

I was 8 years old at that time, but some thirty years later, I still remember that night so vividly! June 12, 1991-The day I fell in love with sports.
